  • What I have learned from trade shows

I just go back from China last Sunday. The big topic there was controlling hydraulic actuators without using servo valve. There is a concept of a servo pump that can accurately position hydraulic actuators.
At the Portland Sawmill show there was a presentation about making hydraulic pumps more energy efficient. There was also a presentation that was similar to those in China about valveless hydraulic actuators.

Last Thursday at dinner the Chinese person told me he things the US is behind China and EU. That may because of the cost and that energy is cheaper here.

    Hi there!
Do you have any interesting updates about the Chinese concept on "servo pump" actuator control and other valveless solutions?

We haven't run into too many servo pumps in the wild. The last one was a few months back at a Pratt&Whitney plant south of Atlanta. It was a big press made by Erie Press. The servo pump was a Bosch-Rexroth servo pump. Our controller was controlling the speed. It worked well but the actuator was moving extremely slow so it wasn't a good test of what a servo pump could do. Our controller was controlling the speed or force. Again, this was not challenging speed wise but the position and force control had to be very good.

I am going to China again at the end of October for the PTC2017 show. I will probably hear a lot of talk but little action on this topic. Industry 4.0 has been the big topic the last couple of times but this is propaganda that comes from the Europeans.
